Classical Style in Interior Design

In the understanding of the modern layperson, the classical style is sometimes a vague or generalized concept. Let’s try to understand what it consists of.

First and foremost, it should be noted that the classical style of apartment design can vary significantly and encompasses many trends. From this diversity, the following prominent directions can be distinguished:

  • Ancient Classical (Greece, Rome)
  • Renaissance Classicism
  • Chinoiserie
  • Neoclassicism
  • English Classicism
  • French Classicism
  • Russian Classicism

This style is suitable for respectable individuals who appreciate elegance, simplicity, calm forms, the luxury of natural materials, and refined surroundings.

Despite the various directions of the classical style in interior design, there are some common characteristics:

  1. Clear symmetry
  2. Strict zoning
  3. Abundance of round or fluted columns
  4. High ceilings
  5. Abundance of architectural elements: arches, capitals, cornices, classical-style moldings, rosettes, paintings, statues, and large mirrors. Partitions are often decorated with friezes and pediments.
  6. A central place in the interior is often occupied by a fireplace with a mantelpiece.
  7. Floors are finished with parquet flooring, often with geometric patterns or artistic laying, or with marble tiles.
  8. Walls are either smoothly painted or covered with wallpaper with a neutral pattern (stripes are also allowed).
  9. Natural materials such as wood, stone, and metal are preferred for finishes.

                 FURNITURE IN CLASSICAL INTERIORS

Furniture in classical interiors is often refined yet simple in form, not overly extravagant. It looks expensive and respectable. It is typically made of valuable wood species such as walnut, cherry, or mahogany, and the backs, legs, or armrests are often adorned with carvings. Upholstered furniture is covered with expensive, dense fabric, either satin or velvet, in solid or striped patterns. Tapestry fabric with narrative or floral motifs is also acceptable.

Books are given an important place and can be displayed prominently in large bookshelves, framing the fireplace or a door with a pediment, thus adding decoration to the room.

Chandeliers used in classical interiors are accentuated and can be complex and multi-tiered.

COLORS IN CLASSICAL INTERIORS

The color palette heavily depends on the direction and type of classical style. While saturated colors (terracotta, olive) are permissible in ancient classical style, French classicism is executed in more subdued and tranquil tones. Regardless of the chosen type, the colors should be noble and complex shades.
